PROBLEMS

I'm having problems with the resolution of my textures. I changed the texture I was using and applied it to the whole terrain. I then realised that the resolution was bad, so i tried to change it back and the whole terrain went funny and didn't let me add any textures on it. I've tried to reload the terrain, generate surface texture, and refine texture tiles... don't know what to do...  Also, I restarted the terrain from scratch, which is really frustrating. I've posted on the forum but no one seems to be replying. This has been a problem before, but I thought I had fixed it by regenerating the surface of the textures. Any suggestions?

IDEAS

As mentioned previously in my mash up, my approach to power involves growth. One of the most common motifs to represent growth are plants and trees. Jacky suggested that I look into MVRDV and I found the MVRDV Gwanggyo City Center somehow connected to my concept of power and growth well. I especially like the way plants have been incorporated into the city.

UPDATE ON ELEVATORS

This is an update on my elevators. The top elevator is for Coca-cola and was inspired by the glass bottles. The bottom elevator is for Facebook and was inspired by the Facebook icon and the idea of networking and growth.

36 TEXTURES

These are my textures. The three words relating to movement that I chose are dynamic, flowing and rigid. I tried to base these words on what I think about the strengths and movement of power of the companies that I have chosen, Coca-Cola and Facebook. For example, Facebook has responded to a changing world involving a need for greater communication/ networking across the globe (dynamic movement, continuously changing).  The other two words I have chosen relating to movement were based on Coca-Cola. I chose the word flowing simply because of the soft-drink, the power of the company grew as the popularity of the drink grew. I thought rigid was appropriate for Coca-Cola because the company has been known for the secretive nature of the recipe for the famous drink and the emergence of the drink in a conservative era, therefore rigid.

FIRST SKETCH UP MODEL AND FURHTER DEVELOPMENT IN CryENGINE

I've done my first sketch up model and uploaded it on the engine. Again when I opened up the engine, the surface texture had disappeared:

Here is my landscape, I've has a lot of difficulty. I asked a few people but they can't seem to figure it out...

Ovbiously I have to work on my landscape and I want to further develop it to reflect the place of inspiration.

PROGRESS ON CryENGINE

This week has been difficult with CryEngine. I have to go to the labs to do my work on CryEngine which means I have to save it on an external hard drive or USB. It seems that whenever I come back to the labs and open up a previous version of my work the terrain surface disappears. In addition, everything takes ages to load and appear on the Engine. When I use Fraps to capture  images of my work, the whole screen starts flickering and the screen turns red.  One of my friends suggested that this is happening because of the terrain size is large. I haven't yet gone and shrunk the size of my terrain, but hopefully that will do the trick.

Although progress on CryEngine has been extraordinarily slow, I've progressed further with my concept for experiment 3. In my previous post, I looked at Japanese metabolism and finally felt that I had a little bit of direction with the bridge. I've came up with an initial idea - but I need to ask Jacky about it.

With the textures, they're still coming along...

JAPANESE METABOLISM

Power involves an aggressive growth plan aimed at tapping emerging opportunities. Power requires recognizing new investments and phenomenal growth to find the next frontier. Power in business involves attracting investors keen to get a slice of a strong consumer brand. It is about uncovering opportunities to make something even more extraordinary and to deliver the best.

The mash-up of the articles from week one, which I published earlier, refers to power specific to business revolving around GROWTH.This is what will drive the design for this experiment.
Jacky suggested last week that I look into Japanese Metabolism for ideas.
Here is some of what I found:

In the late 1950s, a small group of young Japanese architects and designers joined forces under the title "Metabolism". Their vision for cities of the future inhabited by a mass society were characterized by large scale, flexible and expandable structures that evoked the processes of organic growth...
Metabolist designs relied heavily on advanced technology, and they often consist of adaptable plug-in megastructures. Famous projects included the floating city in the sea (Unabara project), Kiyonori Kikutake's Marine City, Tower City, Ocean City, Wall City, Kisho Kurokawa's Agricultural City and Helix City. The most famous built example of Metabolism is Kurokawa's Nakagin Capsule Tower (1972).

The Japanese metabolism style of architecture does relate well to my mash-up concept of power and growth. This movement was born in a context when Japan had just emerged from the war-period and was looking forward to a time of economic and social growth
I'm really intrigued and inspired by Kurokawa's Nakagin Capsule Tower. The separate modules in the structure give an impression that this building would be able to continually grow with the addition of more modules.
I hope to incorporate these ideas into my design.

MOVING ENTITY IN CryENGINE 3

I had a go at making an elevator on the engine. It took a while but I managed to get the elevator moving. However I had problems with taking screen shots of it but here is what I have:

I did also try to take a video of my moving elevator but I was having some problems with Fraps.
Here is a video I took on my phone. It's not very good but...

I will give it another go and upload some better pictures of the view as you ride the elevator.

ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS (IN PROGRESS)

Having problem with scanner. Will replace these images ASAP. For now here is the first 6 drawings at eye-level.

VALLEY IN CRYSIS

So this was my first attempt at trying to recreate the Bandarban valley...
I tried to make the mid section hilly and valley-like.

This is a closer look at the valley.

This is a close look at the vegetation. I don't think it quiet matches the vegetation of the valley- but the choice of the valley is only meant to be inspiration any how.

VALLEY

In Bangladesh, there are a lot of hilly areas, particularly in the Chittagong Hill Tract area. The particular area of Bangladesh where my parents are from doesn't necessarily have valleys.  I've chose to do Bandarban District (which is a part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts). This is a rural area with a lot of history. However, it is becoming a popular tourist destination. I don't know why  transnational corporations would like to set up in such a remote area, although Coca Cola has achieved some standard of global domination already, with its products available for purchase in a lot of remote village areas of Bangladesh. Below are links to more information about the Bandarban district.

This landscape has a beautiful mix of yellow-green grass and has dense vegetation. It regularly has large fog clouds rolling in. It also has a few waterfalls. I would like to include these in my crysis model (although I had problems doing it in experiment 2).

36 CUSTOM TEXTURES

I have chosen the following textures to use in my final design

Saturday 5 May 2012

ELECTROLIQUID AGGREGATION

The final design to this brief was inspired by the following two concepts from week 1;
 lvar Aalto:
MONUMENTALITY-
Holistic use of singular material (Bricks) heightens sense of monumentality.
Kengo Kuma:
HORIZONTALITY-
Horizontality and low scale of the building complements the discreteness and invisibility of the architecture.
In the final design of the structure, the space inspired by Alvar Aalto and monumentality (shown as monument 1 in red)  relates to the Architectural Studies and Architectural Computing students. This is because of their specific interest and influence upon the design buildings and structures.
An Engineers interest with regards to a building is primarily about its structure and foundations. This is why in the final design, the space for the engineering students is in the lower parts of the structure (shown as monument 2 in yellow), where the foundations are.

With all this in mind, here is my final electroliquid aggregation:

Architecture is a discipline, which elevates a simple dwelling or shelter into something that communicates on an emotional or spiritual level with its occupants and observers. The monumentality of a structure, which extends towards the sky, can symbolize the architects influence on emotions and spirituality. Through engineering, the experiences of the occupants are improved with regards to the functionality of a structure. An Engineers influence upon the design starts with the foundations of the structure and continues with overlooking the remainder of the building whether the design is conceptually driven by the horizontality and low scale of the structure or otherwise.

CRYSIS

The following images are of some trials that I did on crysis with my model.

I have added more trees so as to have the shadows of the trees cast on to the model.

PARALLEL PROJECTIONS OF INTERCONNECTING CONCEPTS

The following is my interconnected models developed from the previous drawings in week 1.
I did interpret the phrases put forward during week 1 loosely, which is why the specific phrases do not necessarily match the designs.  In this post, I will assess the things I like and dislike to clarify which design I should use in the final crysis model.

1)
Alvar Aalto:
MONUMENTALITY-  Holistic use of singular material (Bricks) heightens sense of monumentality.
Kengo Kuma:
HORIZONTALITY- Horizontality and low scale of the building complements the discreteness and invisibility of the architecture.

I like this pairing of models. However, when I look at the original two concepts put forward in week 1, they are kind of contradictory. Again, that was because I had initially interpreted the concepts very loosely. I don't think the colours work. I may change that.

2)
Alvar Aalto:
RHYTHMIC ARRANGEMENT OF ELEMENTS-Rhythmic arrangement of elements mimics the tactility of the forest.
Kengo Kuma:
FRAGMENTATION- Dispersal and fragmentation resulting in the building's envelopment by the landscape
This particular amalgamation of models, i think has depth but maybe lacks something. I did push and pull to elongate elements to fix this. I think though that it does communicate two different elements coming together, with a meeting place for the two groups (which would be the mid-section of the structure where the link between them).

3)
Alvar Aalto:
VERTICALITY- Verticality of the elements stresses importance in the landscape.
Kengo Kuma:
FILTER OF LIGHT- Placement of planes as a filter of light

I like this design. I think it feels more like a platform for the two groups to meet and share thoughts. I think the colours are subtle enough.
